University of Bridgeport’s Center for Career Development is available to help students in every step of their career and professional development! From resumes, to mock interviews, a Career Advisor is available to help students prepare to apply and interview for open positions. Adhering to the timeline and using the available resources will help you to gain a competitive edge that will allow you to stand out in a competitive job market.
Freshman year
- Knowledge of the Center for Career Development and getting started on a resume
- Register for Handshake and start student profile
- Complete Focus2 Assessments and research top 5 careers
- Join a group or club and get involved
- Apply for an on-campus position or continue employment to gain soft skills as an employee
- On-campus employment can be found on Handshake, and any questions can be directed to studentemployment@vbj4.com
- Make the connection with Career Advisor with a professional email including resume, LinkedIn, and Handshake to start Career Development Plan (CDP) → Email
Sophomore year
- Update Handshake and LinkedIn profiles, continue connections to build a network
- Meet with Career Advisor to update CDP
- Continue involvement in group or club to gain leadership skills
- Apply for an on-campus position or continue employment to gain soft skills as an employee
- Gain knowledge of the internship process to start searching and applying
Junior/ Senior year
- Start an internship or continue searching and applying for potential internships using Handshake, Indeed, or LinkedIn
- Meet with Career Advisor to update CDP, resume, and cover letter
- Take on a Leadership role in groups or clubs
- Expand professional network on LinkedIn
- Research potential graduate programs and schools to start the application process
- Meet with Career Advisor for a Mock Interview
- Participate in career fairs, networking workshops, and recruitments to practice skills and be more prepared in meeting with employers and professionals, plus learn more about a potential position and employer!
